Overproduction – the Greatest Challenges to the Wine Industry

by

Alison White

Worldwide, overproduction has long been one of the greatest challenges to the wine industry.

In the last three years Spain, France and Italys wine production has increased by over 24 million hectolitres. According to figures from the International Wine and Vine Organisation, a bumper crop in Australia, Argentina and Europe has put global wine production at an estimated 287 million hectolitres (the highest since 1992). Most of this increase is attributable to France, Italy and Spain – the world’s three largest wine producing countries.

The European Union produces an astonishing 1.5 billion litres of unwanted of wine every year which equates to 4 bottles per person per year. EU spends half a billion euros every year turning wine we don’t buy into spirit that’s not needed, so that the vineyard owners can survive.

Since 1981, the EU has been distilling surplus wine into industrial alcohol which is a costly process. There is an annual budget of 220 million which can be used to distil 11 million hectolitres of wine.

Until the 2002 vintage, there had been a crisis distillation each year since the mid-eighties. The last crisis distillation, from the 2001 harvest, removed an extra 7 million hectolitres of wine from the market.

But this year, a combination of higher production, a weak dollar and declining domestic consumption in both Spain and Italy, spells trouble for the EU wine industry – and consequently the possibility of reigniting crisis distillations.

Denis Verdier, president of the CCVF said: It is the first time in the history that the gravity of the crisis has led to AOC wines calling upon distillation. In addition to the distillation, Mr. Verdier asks for financial assistance in pulling up vines, including 10,000 hectares in the Bordeaux region.

Several reports suggested that half the vineyards in the EU are to be grubbed up. These proposed measures are still being discussed. So the earliest any proposals can become a reality is 2008, this combined with plans to stop buying and distilling surplus wines and relax constrictive winemaking and labelling rules means that Europe is set to continue producing more wine that we want to drink!

Saturday, January 8, 2011

US congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot at a public event in Tucson, Arizona today. At least five were killed and several others were wounded in the shooting, including at least one of Giffords’ staff. The shooting occurred at a Safeway supermarket where Giffords, a Democratic Party member who represented Arizona’s 8th congressional district, had scheduled a public “Congress on Your Corner” event.

Giffords was widely reported as having died after the attack, but her public relations personnel later said she was undergoing surgery. Giffords was shot in the head at close range, and according to the Pima County sheriff, Giffords, aged 40, died from the attack. National Public Radio, however, reported that there were conflicting reports about her death.

Giffords was airlifted to a nearby hospital and underwent emergency surgery. A spokesperson for University Medical Center said, “She is currently in surgery. She’s alive,” adding that nine other shooting victims had been taken to the hospital. After the surgery, the hospital announced Giffords was alive with a single gunshot wound to the head and that she was responsive.

The hospital also said that a nine-year-old was among those killed in the shooting. David Gonzales, a US Marshal, said that federal judge John Roll also died from his wounds. President Barack Obama said the shooter killed a total of five people.

Peter Michaels, of Arizona Public Media, said Giffords had been speaking to several people when someone began firing randomly from around 4 feet (1.2 metres) away. The gunman attempted to flee but was tackled by an onlooker and taken into police custody. Described as in his late teens to early twenties, he was later identified as 22-year-old Jared Loughner, who used a handgun in the attack.

On December 2, the Toronto city council voted in favor of banning the sales and distribution of bottled water on city property. The council also agreed to provide public drinking fountains on their properties, as well as on a measure that would make shoppers pay at least five Canadian cents for plastic grocery bags and force business owners to offer reusable bags and carry-out containers.

“Toronto’s decision to ban the bottle and turn on the tap sends a clear message that bottled water’s 15 minutes are up,” said Polaris Institute’s campaign coordinator, Joe Cressy.

All of the city’s facilities should be following the water ban by 2011, while businesses will have to implement their bag fees by 2010. Toronto has become the largest city in the world to ban bottled water on government property.

The level of behavioral change is correlated with the commitment level of the executive.

The executive coaching process identifies needed areas of change from gathered information. Asking open ended questions of executives concerning what behavioral developmental areas motivate them to make adjustments is critically important for success. The desired change needs to align with organizational values and has to improve performance on multiple levels. The coach-client relationship is a partnership that has a joint agreement to reach desired outcomes or goals. The executive is required to commit to the hard work needed to implement and sustain a positive change in life. The executive coach drives the pace and directional focus which is in the best interest of the client.

Trust and confidentiality are achieved and maintained by the coach throughout the engagement to enable the client to obtain a deeper understand of self, situation, and process that either limits or enhances performance. Executive coaching is about raising awareness and maximizing leadership strengths within situations that maximize results and overall satisfaction. Avoiding problems and acknowledging behaviors provide substantial benefits and enhancements in most workplace situations.

The knowledge economy has taken us by storm and has changed the way things are done on a permanent basis. The old ways to success are simply old. Tennis: Nadal beats Murray in Wimbledon quarter final

In CategoryUncategorized
BybQpMHGmt

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Britain’s Andy Murray today was defeated by Rafael Nadal, who is ranked as the second best tennis player in the world, in the quarter finals of the Wimbledon Championships. Nadal won by three sets to none.

As the winner, Nadal will face Rainer Schuettler or Arnaud Clement in the final. Except for in the Australian Open, neither Schuettler or Clement have got past the quarter final of a major tournament, while Nadal has won several international competitions. Reaching the quarter finals is Murray’s most successful run.

Murray was born in Scotland in 1987 and he is currently Britain’s highest ranked player, at number eleven worldwide. A successful run at Wimbledon would have meant that Murray’s ranking would have risen higher.

Nadal was born in Spain in 1986, and his ranking is second only to that of Roger Federer. He is well known for winning a record 81 consecutive clay court matches.

Murray started the first set well, with him being close behind for much of the first half of the set. After Murray had won three games of the set, however, his play got worse and he lost the set 6-3.

Nadal dominated much of the second set, and he got a clear lead at the early stages of the set. Murray, fought back unsuccessfully, although he managed to stay only one game behind Nadal at the early stages of the set. The set finished with Nadal winning by six games to two.

The first game of the third set was won by Murray, although Nadal won the next game without letting his opponent score a single point. Murray almost broke serve in the third game, although he started to fall apart after he had won thirty points.

The set’s next three games were very similar to the first three, with the two opponents being on an equal score after six games. Nadal then won the next three games to take the match.

Before the match, Murray said that he thought he had a chance of beating Nadal. “Obviously he’s the favourite for the match but I do think that I can win,” he said, speaking to BBC Sport.

On Tuesday, Google introduced a new service called Google Buzz, a new feature to share updates, photos and videos. The service is built into Gmail, which already has 176 million users, according to comScore. Buzz’s features will be available on Android operating system based phones as well as the iPhone, allowing real-time updates.

Google hopes to integrate frequently visited sites like Picasa, Flickr, Google Reader, Twitter and YouTube, so users can stay connected to everyone via a single browser window.

Buzz has a built-in group of friends which are automatically selected including the people that the user communicates with most frequently via Gmail and Google Talk.

Google Buzz will be available as a mobile Web application, letting the user provide status updates by voice and geotagging their posts. Location-based updates can be read while one is using Google Mobile Maps. Posts by fellow users can be classified location-wise.

Google executives said that Buzz would help tackle the problem of information overload, as Google would apply its algorithms to help people find the information most relevant to them.

Facebook currently has more than 350 million active users worldwide. Google already has a micro-blogging site Jaiku, comparable to Twitter in terms of format. Orkut also has been one of Google’s previous ventures in social networking. Google Buzz will look to compete with such sites.

Ford Motors posts US$2.7 billion annual profit

In CategoryUncategorized
BybQpMHGmt

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Ford Motors Co., the automobile manufacturing firm, has posted an annual profit for the last year of US$2.7 billion, the first gain for four years.

The statistics are an improvement from 2008, when the car company posted a loss of close to $15 billion. For the final quarter of 2009, Ford says it made profits of $868 million, and expects to continue to be profitable this year. The company had cut its costs to $118.3 billion last year, $19.8 billion than the year previous. Ford had a $34.3 billion debt at the end of 2009.

In the fourth quarter, Ford brand sales were up thirteen percent compared to the same time in 2008 in the US, and obtained 15.3% of the automobile market in the country.

The firm’s president and chief executive, Alan Mulally, commented on the profits. “While we still face significant challenges ahead, 2009 was a pivotal year for Ford and the strongest proof yet that our One Ford plan is working and that we are forging a path toward profitable growth,” he said, adding that “global economic conditions are reviving but remain fragile.”
